Activities
May we suggest the following as our favourite activities?
Walk to Drawing Room Rocks
A ten minute drive up Woodhill Mountain Road takes you to the start of the walk up the escarpment to Drawing Room Rocks, where gigantic sandstone rocks have been sculpted into an arrangement of tables and chairs. There is a "chair" that is right on the edge of the escarpment, 600 metres above sea level, virtually straight down. The walk is steep but manageable, taking about 30 minutes. You will walk through interesting and diverse bush and when you get there, at the edge of the escarpment, you will agree it was worth it! You can see Berry, Kangaroo Valley, Gerroa, Jervis Bay, Nowra, Bomaderry, Shoalhaven Heads, and Coolangatta. We can pack you an "easy to carry" picnic to enjoy at the top.
Explore Berry on Foot
Pick up a map from us, and set off on a 2.5 km walk, past the old Berry Courthouse, the famous Berry Showground, Berry's cute little swimming pool, past the horse stables and railway station, then along the oldest street in Berry. You will pass the sourdough bakery, a very nice eatery indeed. Turn left into the main street and keep going straight until you come to George Street, and you're home.
Shopping
Wherever you go, Berry, Kangaroo Valley, Kiama, Gerringong, Huskisson or Nowra, there are plenty of wonderful shops. Berry does have a good reputation for its shopping, and is hard to beat.
Kiama by Train
Cityrail trains run between Berry and Kiama about two hours apart. The journey is short (just two stops away), very pretty, and different to what you see by car. When you arrive in Kiama you are just up the hill from the main street and harbour. You could walk to the blow-hole, have fresh seafood for lunch, or just about any other food you might feel like. There are great shops to wander through, and the harbour is always interesting to watch. Catch the train home in the afternoon for sundowners on the front verandah. Click here to check the train timetable.
Jervis Bay
This amazing area is actually classified as a "non self governing external territory of the Commonwealth of Australia", similar, for example, to Christmas Island. It has escaped development and remains as pristine as it was more than 200 years ago.
It takes about 40 minutes by car to arrive at Huskisson, where you can enjoy a 2 hour Dolphin Watch cruise for $24 per person. Then spend the rest of the day finding Green Patch, Hyams Beach, McMasters Beach, and all the other hidden treasures of Jervis Bay. Or choose one of the amazing walks through the Booderee Botanic Gardens. Click here for more information.
Kangaroo Valley
It takes about 20 minutes in the car from Berry to Kangaroo Valley, straight up Kangaroo Valley Road. A good detour will take you along Tourist Road and up to Cambewarra Mountain Lookout and Teahouse. Continue along to the end of Tourist Road, and then turn right into Moss Vale Road. Kangaroo Valley township is a few kilometres away. Coming home, turn left off Moss Vale Road into Berry Mountain Road. A few kilometres you will come to a fork in the road. Straight ahead takes you over Berry Mountain and down into Berry. Turn left to return to Berry via Woodhill Mountain Road. Both routes are very scenic. Berry Mountain is tarred all the way, whereas Woodhill Mountain has a bit of dirt road.
Minnamurra Rainforest
Just to the west of Kiama, up in the hills, you will find the most southern rainforest of its kind in Australia - a rare remnant indeed. A carefully constructed boardwalk takes you around the rainforest, and it is quite breathtaking. The boardwalk is wheelchair friendly. Click here for more information.
Walk Along the Beach
There is nowhere nicer for a stroll along the beach than Seven Mile Beach at "lowish" tide. A short 8km car ride along Beach Road, straight ahead over Bolong Road to the car park and barbeque area and you have arrived at Berry Beach. The beach is long and flat, and is a 3.5km walk north to Gerroa. Check the tides for the best time, and usually the mornings are best. The water remains warm from December through to May, and there is nothing like a dip after a good brisk walk.
Shoalhaven River Cruises
The magnificent Shoalhaven River is a ten minute drive from Berry Orchard. Once over the bridge, turn left to get to the public wharf. These cruises require a minimum number to operate, and therefore need to be booked early. Click here for more details.
Nowra Wildlife Park
Nowra Wildlife Park is set in 16 acres of native bushland, and rests on the banks of the beautiful Shoalhaven River. It is the largest native animal park on the NSW South Coast, bringing together over 100 species of mammals, birds and reptiles. Fantastic for oversees and local visitors alike. Click here for more information.
Berry Museum
A fascinating way to spend an hour or two, finding out the interesting history of Berry, named after Alexander Berry (as was Berry's Bay on Sydney Harbour). Berry was one of the only estate towns in Australia, and thanks to David Berry, Alexander's son, the houses were sold off to the people who lived in them. The museum is open Saturdays and Sundays from 11 till 2. Click here for more information.
Tennis
Berry has four fantastic synthetic grass courts available for hire for $8.00 per person per hour. Call in at the Shell Service Station (on the left going down the street) to pay and pick up the keys. Racquets and balls are available on request, but if you can play a bit you might like to bring your own racquet and buy new balls from the service station!
After your game, walk north across the sporting field towards Bundewallah Creek and you will come to Camp Quality - a very pretty spot!
Horse Riding
Spend a day in Kangaroo Valley, and take in a two hour horse ride in the mountains. Cost is $75 per person. Beginners and advanced are welcome, but book early to guarantee a spot. Click here for more information.
